One of the oldest and largest cathedrals in the world hid a fantastic secret for centuries, one that was often rumored but not confirmed. The vast, splendid Hagia Sophia, which is now a museum, sits atop an ancient series of underground tunnels said to connect the cathedral with the Basilica Cistern, Princes’ Islands and Topkapi Palace. Director Göksel Gülensoy has enjoyed a long-standing love of the Hagia Sophia, and he decided to embark on a scuba diving expedition under the building to unlock some of her ancient secrets.

Gülensoy began his documentary project in 1998, but budget concerns and Turkish government red tape delayed its completion until late 2009. His 50-minute film, “In the Depths of Hagia Sophia” (or “Ayasofya’nin Derinliklerinde”) shows a side of the historic structure that has never before been explored in depth, let alone filmed. Along with two divers and four spelunkers, the director delved into the mysterious depths to see what, exactly, Hagia Sophia was hiding.

The team began by opening the reservoir doors in the main hall; the two doors had both been shut for quite some time, and never before had a diver been allowed into the reservoir. After studying the small first chamber, the team moved on to the larger second reservoir. There they found flasks thought to have been left behind by British soldiers in 1917, a chain which may have contained a prisoner at one time, and various other bits and pieces of the cathedral. The spelunkers then took over and moved into the two passageways beneath the Hagia Sophia.

Beneath the huge cathedral, the team found sealed passages, a graveyard full of children’s bones, and the burial chamber of Hagia Sophia’s first priest. Threats of gas leaks, landslides and collapses weighed heavily on everyone’s minds, but the entire team emerged safely. For their own peace of mind, and to head off any rumors that might arise in the future, every person who dove beneath Hagia Sophia that day underwent a full-body X-ray to prove that no artifacts had been removed from the site.

After the project, it became clear that Gülensoy and his team had disproven many of the myths surrounding the ancient cathedral. The passages long thought to lead to the Basilica Cistern and Princes’ Islands were found to be nonexistent. However, the exploration led Turkish officials and the Hagia Sophia Museum Director to believe that further research should be carried out to see what other mysteries may be hiding beneath this beloved building. If he can gain the necessary government permissions, Gülensoy plans to return to make another film about the hidden history of Hagia Sophia.

Silent and pollution free, the Aircruise combines solar power with a primary hydrogen drive for a cruising speed of around 90mph. It can fly up to a maximum of 12,000ft but if there are specific areas of interest en route it can drop down to a few hundred feet.

Aircruise straddles the line between a cruise ship and a floating hotel. Theoretically, it could ferry 100 people from London to New York in a leisurely 37 hours or from Los Angeles to Shanghai in just under four days.

The main structure consisting of eight vertical, composite lattices supporting four main flexible envelopes, which contain 330,000 cubic metres of hydrogen gas. Lower decks are ‘hung’ off these primary supports. Each of the four external envelopes contains modular self-sealing lifting bags, minimising the incidence of bag rupture and ensuring safe flight even with a major external skin rupture.

The project, entitled ‘Parallel Lines’, is part of a new, global campaign to promote the unique cinematic viewing experience offered by Philips’ range of TVs and is a follow up to the internationally acclaimed and award winning Carousel short film developed for the launch of the Philips Cinema 21:9 TV.

For the project, Philips selected a single unifying theme and challenged RSA’s directors to submit treatments for a short film in a genre of the director’s choice. Forty-five treatments were received in total from which Philips selected five it believed were most ground-breaking. The films explore the most popular genres of filmmaking including drama, action, animation, sci-fi and thriller, and were shot on location in Uruguay, London, Moscow, China and South Africa.

“My production company receives hundreds of ideas every day, but this was something unique. The idea created a massive amount of enthusiasm from RSA directors around the world” commented director and founding partner of RSA, Sir Ridley Scott.

The campaign demonstrates Philips commitment to bringing the cinema experience home. Philips understands that creating compelling cinematic content is the best way to offer consumers the chance to experience the immersive cinematic capabilities of its TVs.

We want to show that people can enjoy the experience of the cinema at home and that’s why we’re delighted to be working with such talented directors on this exciting project”, commented Gary Raucher, Vice President and Head of Integrated Communications, Philips Consumer Lifestyle. “The stunning films we’ve developed with RSA will give people the chance to experience first-hand how Ambilight, picture quality and sound quality of Philips TVs bring cinema home.”

It is the third year that Philips has been involved in ground-breaking film projects. In 2009, the arrestingly surreal and technically brilliant short film, Carousel, directed by Adam Berg, was awarded the Cannes-Lions 2009 Film GRAND PRIX amongst others. With five films due to be released in April, this year’s venture aims to push the boundaries even further.

The objective of the campaign is to engage film fans and drive awareness of Philips TVs’ cinematic viewing experience proposition through its unique ‘Ambiplayer’ media player. Parallel Lines will be promoted via an interactive though-the-line campaign with a strong focus on social media. The agency team includes DDB, Tribal DDB, Unit 9, Carat and Omnicom’s OneVoice consortium of agencies for PR.

Commenting on the scope of the 2010 project, Neil Dawson, Chief Creative Officer at DDB Worldwide for Philips said: “Philips demonstrated its ability to create memorable cinematic viewing experiences with the successful Carousel film developed for the launch of its Cinema 21:9 TV. A pale sequel would have been a mistake. This year, the task was to take a bold step forward with a through-the-line idea to showcase Philips’ credentials across their whole range”.

The five films will be released online at www.philips.com/cinema on 8th April 2010. The films will be shown using the Philips’ ‘Ambiplayer’ – a special online media player which recreates the effect of Philips’ unique Ambilight technology, plus picture quality and sound quality of Philips TVs. Exclusively at www.philips.com/cinema, the Ambiplayer will have special interactive features allowing users to interact with the immersive light, picture and sound experience.

At the heart of the campaign, a dedicated Facebook site has been launched (www.facebook.com/philipscinema) featuring director interviews, stills, behind-the-scenes clips, and other cinematic viewing experiences. One of the directors, Jake Scott, contributed to the Facebook page with an exclusive blog from the Sundance Film Festival, and will also be blogging direct from the Berlin Film Festival.

A trailer for the films is due to be released via the Facebook page on 26th February. On, 7th April (one day prior to the release of the films), Philips has bought a Facebook ‘reach block’ across 10 global markets whereby all users in those markets will see the trailer on their personal homepage. Those who click through and become a fan of Parallel Lines will be rewarded by being offered the chance to preview a film the day before their official release.

In a world first, Parallel Lines’ digital integration includes a YouTube homepage masthead in widescreen 21:9 cinematic format which will appear in seven markets on launch day, 8th April. It will direct consumers to a Philips Cinema channel where they can watch the Parallel Lines trailer in HD quality on Philips widescreen 21:9 Ambiplayer. It will be the first time a 21:9 cinematic format media player has ever been used on YouTube.

Greg Fay

A former associate editor at both iD and The Face magazines, Fay has directed music videos for acts including Lilly Allen, Oasis, and The Streets and worked for commercial clients including Reebok, Orange, British Airways and Yellow Pages. In 2005 he wrote and directed his first short Last Trip to Cardiff on the back of which he was signed (as one half of directing partnership Ben & Greg) to Partizan Films. He joined RSA as a director in his own right in 2008 and has shot numerous commercials for the likes of The Guardian, Asda and Vodafone, amongst others. In February 2010 Greg will shoot a pilot for a BBC Wales comedy series called Dappers.

Johnny Hardstaff

His most notable works to date remain the politically provocative shorts films, History of Gaming and Future of Gaming, which have now been inducted into the National Film Archive. Hardstaff also famously created the experimental music video Like Spinning Plates for Radiohead, and is responsible for a raft of innovative, contemporary, design based commercials for leading brands.

Carl Erik Rinsch

At just 14 years old, Rinsch had his first film shown at both the New York and Tulleride Film Festivals. Since then he has worked as a photojournalist for Rolling Stone magazine, and now as a director has received accolades including the D&AD/Campaign Screen Award for Best New director. He was fortunate to have been included in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at Cannes. Rinsch’s work includes visually stunning and memorable commercials for the likes of BMW, Earthlink, Sprite and the SciFi Channel.

Jake Scott

Scott gained early directorial prominence with REM’s Everybody Hurts which won multiple MTV awards, a Grammy nomination and was inducted into the MVPA Hall of Fame in 2005. He has also directed videos for U2, No Doubt, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Strokes and George Michael, and has two videos in the MTV 100 best videos of all time. In 2003, Scott won an Emmy for Best Commercial, three AICP awards and an Andy for his work on Nike’s Move. In 2005, Scott won a Silver Lion awards in Cannes for his work on Adidas in addition to winning two CLiOs for the same brand spot. Scott was nominated for a Grammy for direction of George Michael’s Flawless for Best Music Video and received three AICP awards for his work with Nike’s Magnet. In 2008, his work on HBO’s Voyeur won him a Grand Prix and a Cyber Lion at Cannes, Scott has recently completed his second film, Welcome to the Rileys starring Kristen Stewart and James Gandolfini and Academy Award nominee Melissa Leo, which has just screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Hi-Sim

The pseudonym of directing duo Chris Hawkes and Cheun Hung Tsang, their work consists of live action and computer generated imagery. They were recently featured in Boards magazine as one of the top 20 directors to watch out for. They have directed many commercial projects for brands including Adidas, Stella McCartney, Bacardi and Investec Specialist Bank.

When  complete, the bridge will provide a new link  between the states of Nevada and Arizona. In  an incredible feat of engineering, the road will  be supported on two massive concrete arches  which jut out of the rock face.

The  arches are made up of 53 individual sections,  each 24 feet long, which have been cast  on-site and are being lifted into place using an  improvised high-wire crane strung between temporary  steel pylons.

The  arches will eventually measure more than 1,000  feet across.  At the moment, the structure  looks like  a traditional suspension bridge. But once the arches are  complete, the suspending cables on each side will  be removed. Extra  vertical columns will then be installed on the  arches to carry the road.

The bridge has become  known as the Hoover Dam bypass, although it is officially called the Mike  O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, after a  former governor of Nevada and an American football player  from Arizona who joined the US Army and was  killed in Afghanistan.

Work  on the bridge started in 2005 and  should finish next year.  An estimated  17,000 cars and trucks will cross it every  day.

The H2Office is a purpose-built floating office that can comfortably accommodate one or two workers. Turkey’s largest city rests on a fault between two massive plates of the earth’s crust. Scientists say this could cause an earthquake even more destructive than the one which shocked Haiti three weeks ago.

Around 14 million people live in Istanbul, the city that literally bridges two continents over the Bosphorus, a strait between the European and Asian part of Turkey.

According to Ahmet Ercan, head of the Turkish Geophysical Society, the next massive earthquake to occur in the region will have an epicenter in the Sea of Marmara — around 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Istanbul — at a depth between 7 and 10 kilometers (11–16 miles).

The tremor could result in a tsunami as well.

Though Ercan said the potential was not likely exceed 6.7 on the Richter scale, he warned that Istanbul’s “particular geological makeup could enhance the power of the quake to somewhere between 7.0 and 8.0,” with a radius of up to 90 kilometers.

The January 12 quake in Haiti has made it clear what an earthquake can mean for a large city like Istanbul. But this is a danger many Turkish citizens already know too well.

In 1999, a 7.4-magnitude quake hit the city of Izmit, which straddles essentially the same fault as Istanbul. According to official figures, the disaster killed over 18,000 people — over 10 percent of the population.

There have been 15 massive earthquakes recorded in Istanbul since the fourth century, evidence enough that the city cannot afford to neglect the risks of a future earthquake.

Construction issues

The United Nations recently published a study looking into earthquake mortality risks among the world’s largest cities. Scientists found that more people would be at risk of losing their life if a massive earthquake were to strike Istanbul than any other city in the world.

City officials say the deteriorating quality of Istanbul’s buildings is partly to blame for the high risk citizens face.

The city is looking to rip down dilapidated structures and construct new buildings, but this has proved more difficult than expected.

“There are so many rules and laws here; it makes it almost impossible to accomplish anything,” said Hasan Atas, a city official. “The entire city is full of dilapidated buildings that can’t be torn down because they are protected by law.”

Pure chaos

According to Segal Sengor, a leading geophysicist at Istanbul’s Technical University, a massive earthquake would essentially destroy Istanbul: buildings would implode and most people would get buried under the rubble.

“Underneath the majority of the streets, there are pipelines that will most likely burst, and there will be fires,” Sengor said. “The people will all attempt to flee: it will be a scenario of utter catastrophe and pure chaos.”

The city says it is taking measures to protect the metropolis and its inhabitants from the dangers of an earthquake. But as the devastation in Haiti has shown, there is not much one can do once disaster really strikes.

Bu 5 film, !f istanbul’un son iki gününde, yani 20–21 Şubat tarihlerinde, İstanbul’da festival kapsamında gösterilirken sağlanacak dijital bağlantı ile eş zamanlı olarak Türkiye genelinde 12 şehrin yanısıra, Lefkoşa, Ramallah, Gümrü, Tiflis ve Tanger’de de izlenecek.
